Comments to album John Coltrane - Offering: Live At Temple University
Yanthyr
My only gripe about this recording is that it sounds like there was one microphone used to record the whole show. The piano and drums do not sound like they were mic'd so you can only hear the rhythm section very faintly in the background and can barely make out what they're doing. Now I understand the focus of the performance is Coltrane's sax and that definitely comes through but that's about the only thing that does. Coltrane is playing right into the main, one and only microphone so his tone drowns out whatever the band is doing. Is that a bad thing? Basically this recording is pretty much a solo performance of Coltrane improvising without any immediate backing band for almost two hours with little breaks here and there. I would probably say this record is for hardcore Coltrane fans. It's just pure improvisation and pushing the limit of sound not a standard jazz performance but standard for Coltrane. The musical concepts presented are pretty far out there but pleasant if you like that sort of thing like I do

I totally agree with this comment. I like the album, but the description made here is fair and correct
